The Amherst County Sheriff’s Office has four K-9
units that are assigned to Field Operations. All four teams are
certified in the search and detection of various illegal narcotics such as
marijuana and cocaine. In addition, Dex and Major are also certified
in patrol procedures to effectively search for and detain persons that have
fled the scene of a crime. Each of these dogs are individually
selected and undergo hundreds of hours of training to effectively perform
these assigned tasks. To receive their initial certification, each K-9
unit participates in practical exercises designed to teach them how to
search vehicles and buildings to locate a person or drugs. To maintain
certification, each K-9 unit must continue with their training in addition
to their assigned patrol duties. |
