Project Lifesaver was established in December 2000 as an initiative of
Sheriff L. J. Ayers III and the Amherst County Sheriff’s Office. Its mission
is to use state-of-the-art technology in assisting those who care for
victims of Alzheimer’s-Related Mental Dysfunction Disorders (ARMD), Downs
Syndrome, Autism and others who suffer from debilitating psychological
disorders, who may become lost and confused. These victims include the
elderly and even the youngest in our community.
Although parts of Amherst County are very rural and the dangers to those who
are unable to navigate the wilderness safely are great, Project Lifesaver is
just as important in the residential parts of our county. No matter what
season or time of year, extreme environmental conditions can make it
imperative that those in need are found without delay. Through Project
Lifesaver, personalized radio transmitters are placed on program
participants. In the event that they become lost these transmitters assist
the Amherst County Sheriff’s Office in locating those who cannot help
themselves.
Along with the Amherst County Sheriff’s Office many other organizations and
Law Enforcement Agencies have endorsed and pledged their support of Project
Lifesaver. But in order for this program to be successful we need YOU !
How you can help . . .
Recommend or Sign up someone who would benefit from a Project Lifesaver
locator bracelet.
Volunteer – We are always looking for additional volunteers to help staff
our Project Lifesaver Team. You don’t have to be in law enforcement to
volunteer, just have a few hours a month for training. Our members are
important and new members are always welcome!
Donate – You, your church, civic organization or business can make a
monetary contribution to help Project Lifesaver continue to reach those in
need here in Amherst County.
