QUALIFICATIONS
To be assigned to the Field Operations Unit, the deputy must have successfully
completed the Department of Criminal Justice Service (DCJS) mandated basic law
enforcement training, which currently takes approximately 22 weeks. In addition
to this mandated training each deputy must be a First Responder which is an
additional 40 hours and is encouraged to become an EMT, (emergency medical
technician) which is an additional 120 hours.
And the training doesn’t end there, DCJS requires all sworn personnel to
complete 40 hours of in-service training every two years. The Sheriff’s Office
requires deputies to re-qualify with their assigned duty weapon every six
months. In addition, the Office of EMS requires each emergency medical service
provider to complete a number of in-service hours to maintain his or her level
of certification.
SCHEDULING
The Field Operations Unit currently works a 12 hour shift, which rotates
monthly, a month of 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. and a month of 6 p.m. until 6 a.m. With
this schedule each shift works between 16 and 18 days a month on what is called
a 3 - 2 - 2 - 3 cycle. Each squad works three days and are off two, work two
days and off three. This gives each squad every other weekend off and rotates
the days off every year so that the same squad doesn’t work the same holidays
year after year. This schedule also optimizes the deputies off time allowing
them to spend more quality time at home with their families.
