The School Resource Officer Program is a joint initiative between the Sheriff's Office and the Amherst County Public Schools to place specially trained deputies in each of the county’s secondary schools.  To be assigned to the SRO program the deputy must have successfully completed the Department of Criminal Justice Service (DCJS) mandated basic law enforcement training, which currently takes approximately 22 weeks. In addition to this mandated training each deputy must complete additional training also provided by the Department of Criminal Justice Services.  This training prepares the deputy to confidently enter the school and become a partner in maintaining a safe and productive atmosphere for students to learn.

The SRO's responsibilities is to not only to provide a law enforcement presence in the school, but to also build positive relationships with the students and staff.  They are also the liaison between the school and the Sheriff's Office assisting to keep the lines of communication open and active.  The SRO's are called upon by the schools to investigate allegations of criminal activity or offenses that occur on school property. In addition they are often called upon by the Field Operations deputies when they are dealing with a juvenile from their school to facilitate the encounter.

To assist the SRO in building relationships with the students, they teach specially developed classes. One of the most popular programs is Class Action which is taught in both middle schools and the high school.  The SRO may also assist on field trips or other activities that Amherst County Students may be participating in, such as 4-H. They can often be seen patrolling the schools extracurricular activities, like sporting events interacting with the students in a more relaxed atmosphere.

To contact a specific SRO please check the information further down this page or CONTACT the Crime Prevention Office.
